You can make a difference in the heart of a child
We currently run 13 exciting, fun-filled, positive and inspiring camp programs annually for hundreds of children aged 7 to 11 years, across 4 states of Australia. Each camp has 1-3 camp directors plus their trusted assistants who prepare throughout the year for their chance to give children who are described as 'at risk', a place to be a kid without a care in the world.
The camp week kicks off when the children arrive at camp on a bus, to a group of very excited buddies holding up signs with a child's name on it. Each child is paired up with a buddy who ensures their safety, to be a friend and a positive adult role model. Everyone receives a t-shirt and the choice of various soft toys & back-pack. The week's activities can include horse riding, archery, fishing, woodwork, arts and crafts, tea party/ pamper party, animal farm, adventure playground and so much more. One of the highlights is the birthday party where each child is given a birthday present. On the last night there is the Have-A-Go show where children and buddies get to perform together on stage.
By the end of the week, friendships have been made and hope has been restored. Before the children say goodbye to get on the bus, their buddy gives them a memory album with photos taken of them during their week at camp. This is sometimes the only photos they have of themselves. Needless to say these albums are cherished for many years.
We have so many children, who for reasons that we can't go into, have never experienced a care free environment where they feel safe. At SCKC we go to great lengths to ensure each child is given this chance.
Our Camp Objectives
Apart from being a buddy, volunteers also include the camp directors who oversee and manage the camps, support personnel to assist the buddies, a registered nurse, a child social worker, activity coordinators, errand and laundry person, photographer, games/sports coach, music coordinator and special guest presenters.
During each camp, we ensure a 1:1 ratio of children to adults. Some of our adults are called 'buddies' - they provide positive adult role models and are responsible for the care and safety of the children during the camp. We enforce strict policies which include that no buddy is to be alone with their child when out of sight of a group.
It is our policy that all volunteers attending camps are selected through a strict screening process which includes interviews, checking references and Children's Checks. We place a high value on our volunteers and provide in-depth training sessions whereby equipping them with the necessary skills essential for developing positive relationships with the children in our care. We also maintain ongoing contact with our volunteers, via email, letters, phone calls, reunion breakfasts and dinners and have found that many return to help again year after year providing invaluable experience to the teams.

On Saturday the 14th February 2015, our Founding Director, Carolyn Boyd departed this life to be with the Lord. Words fail to express our feelings of loss and grief, as Carolyn was a true servant and ongoing volunteer. She was not only our Founding Director, she was a Writer, a Leader, a Teacher, and she was also our friend. Read more...
